Facebook Applications

Facebook allows users to stay in touch and connect with other Facebook users, and most of that interaction is done through the thousands of applications available on the site. Standard applications, which are created by Facebook, include "Photos", "Events", and "Groups". Other applications, which are mostly entertainment-based, are created by other developers. With the ever-increasing number of applications available, and many continuously adding features, Facebook's Application Directory allows users to browse and add applications of their choice.

The "Photos" application allows users to create an unlimited number of photo albums to which they can upload (or photo message by mobile phone) pictures. Users can then rotate, reorder, and label their photos. The application allows users to browse and edit their photo albums, as well as look at their friends' albums and albums in which they have been "Tagged". Tagging provides users a way to label elements of an image, in particularly naming other Facebook users, which automatically informs those users of the tag/photo. Tagged users, or any users allowed to view the album, can leave comments about a particular photo below the picture.

The "Groups" application allows users to join and create up to 200 groups, based entirely upon their choices - from shared interests and activities to anything users can imagine. Each user's Groups application page displays groups recently joined by friends as well as the groups they have chosen to join. It also provides a search tool, so users can look for particular groups or topics, as well as a "Create a New Group" option.

The "Events" application is potentially the most interactive application on Facebook, as it allows users to coordinate parties, meetings, gatherings, etc. Depending on the privacy setting (which allows users to share the event with as many or as few users as they want), users can search for events of interest or in their community. On a user's Events page, one can look at upcoming events, friends' events, and past events. Users can create their own events, sending out invitations via Facebook to both Facebook and non-Facebook.com users. Facebook users can then RSVP to the event, by visiting the event profile and choosing one of three replies: "attending", "maybe attending", or "not attending".

"Books iRead" allows users to compare their reading interests with other users, get and give book recommendations, browse who is reading what, take and create quizzes, and search an increasing database of books as well as what books friends own. The application allows users to list, rate, and write reviews about the books they have read, want to read, and are currently reading.

The application "(fluff)Friends" allows users to adopt a pet for their Facebook profile page. Users choose one of the ever-changing pets available for adoption, give it a name, and create a profile for their pet. They, and their friends, can then interact with the pet by petting or feeding it, as well as each others' pets. "Munny" is gained by petting other friends' pets, choosing to complete surveys, or inviting friends to the application, and can be used to buy food or habitats (backgrounds) at the (fluff)Shop, as well as for betting on (fluff)Races.
